Our History
Groundhog Day, celebrated every year on February 2nd, has deep roots in both folklore and local pride. The tradition stems from an old European superstition that if a hibernating animal sees its shadow on this day, winter will last six more weeks; if not, spring will come early.
Punxsutawney embraced this tradition in 1887, when a group of local groundhog hunters declared Punxsutawney Phil the one and only true weather prognosticator. Since then, the celebration has grown into a world-famous event drawing tens of thousands of visitors to Gobbler’s Knob each year.
